I will be rating novels based on three categories: Plot, Characters and Steaminess. Each category as the a potential of 9 total points, so the highest rating a novel can receive is a 27. Each category will be broken down into subcategories each rated on a 3 point scale with 3 being the highest. The subcategories will be added up to give the category score, which in turn will be added up to give the overall rating.
Plot:
Strong Beginning:
3- Has you hooked within the first chapter
2- You're interested but not hooked
1- You have to fight to get into the book
Keeps You Hooked:
3- Makes you mad when you have to put the book down to go do something
2- Keeps you coming back to finish it
1- You repeatedly ask yourself "Why am I reading this?"
Predictability (or lack there of)
3- You really couldn't have predicted how the plot would play out
2- You're not too surprised by the action that unfolds, but maybe there are a few
surprises
1- You are completely unsurprised by the way the story goes, as you've read 10
plots just like it
Characters
Believability
3- Completely believable, you'd find people like this in the real world. Deep
characters with a wide range of emotions
2- Some believable, some not
1- Characters are a little too convenient to the plot. The characters are just too
perfect.
Intriguing Leads
3- Interesting, complex characters that you grow attached to and move you
emotionally, that you actually care about
2- Characters that are kinda interesting
1- If the book has you thinking "God, will she just die already?"
Interesting Secondary Characters
3- The characters that add some dynamic to the book
2- The characters may add something, but may not
1- The characters could've been left out and wouldn't have made one difference
Steaminess
Mood (think foreplay)
3- The author set the mood amazingly
2- There was some set up, could've used more
1- All you know is one minute they were talking the next they're banging (which
isn't necessarily a bad thing...)
Hotness
3- Everything was described well and you knew exactly what they were doing
2- There was a bit of description but you were slightly confused
1- There was nothing, the kind that's like "And then he carried her to the
bedroom..."
Number of Times
3- They were doing it like every other chapter!!
2- There was enough, but could've used more
1- It happened once, maybe
And there you have it!
